Watching Nicaraguan Life Pass By

Feelin' thoughtful

As one wise man once said, "Life goes by pretty fast.  If you don't stop and look around once and a while you might miss it".  As tourists/travelers, we sometimes get focused on seeing sites and doing touristy things, but sometimes forget to see all of the activity that is going on around us.  We forget to realize that there are these other people around us that don't have anything to do with the tourist industry and spend all of their days living their lives.

Today we stopped being tourists for a little while and sat and watched the people around us carry on with their daily lives.  We just staked ourselves out at a cafe and took pictures as all kinds of different people came by on horses, bikes, and on foot.  What you see below is a collection of about 2 hours worth of a typical Nicaraguan day in Granada.

Biker and his stuff, Granada, Nicaragua
Biking Family, Granada, Nicaragua
Old Lady Walking, Granada, Nicaragua
Family biking in Granada, Nicaragua
Bikers in Granada, Nicaragua
Biking with a propane tank, Granada, Nicaragua
Horsepower, Granada, Nicaragua
Horsepower, Granada, Nicaragua
Biking with one person is too easy, Granada, Nicaragua
Biker in Granada, Nicaragua
Horsepower, Granada, Nicaragua
Horsepower, Granada, Nicaragua
Funeral Carriage, Granada, Nicaragua
This last one is a funeral carriage.  It must have just finished a funeral.

Don't be shy, tell us "hi"

I love the artistry of how you captured these instants in local peoples' daily lives against the bare wall as background, etching them in sharp relief. And, I (as one busy-life reader among your many) appreciate the reminder to "stop and look around awhile" as my river of life flows inexorably toward its terminus, as all rivers eventually must. Ah, there's an intriguing spot on the passing riverbank, just now!

kyle and i had a great time passing the camera back and forth taking these shots. I think we both could have sat there another few hours. Sometimes it's so nice to take a step back, remove yourself from the "traffic" and watch it pass by.

Wow... Not one police car or fire truck in two hours. Must have gotten boring to look at the same striped wall, fence and red door! :>)

you know, neither of those came down this quiet street, but not far away in Central Park an elementary school was having some sort of outdoor concert/ drum banging, and no less than 3 shiney SUVs pulled up with local police. Mok's not the only place with fancy police get-up. Somehow that style made it all the way down here to Nicaragua. Go figure.

Amazing simplicity.....peaceful lifestyles. When you live in or visit busy cities like Chicago or Paris, it is hard to imagine that much of the world lives without the hustle and bustle that are so ingrained in our existence.

it really is such a funny thing to think about how much of the world lives at a much slower pace than what we're used to. and it's so hard to believe it when you're immersed in something so different, like why don't we paint buildings in chicago with bright stripes?
