Who knew Mexico had mangroves?

Bessie on Playa Ventanilla
We're back!  Kyle's foot is better, and we're ready to hit some crocodiles with a boat.  (No animals were harmed in the writing of this blog.)

We spent part of the afternoon with our Mexican Mangrove guide, David, who taught us some spanish slang and took us out for an adventure.  First some spanish slang:
- ¿Qué onda? = What's up?!
- El es una persona onda. = He's a cool person.
- Es changón. = It's cool
- una chela = a beer
- ¡Que mono! = How cute! (like a girl in the mall talking about cute shoes - only use to describe inanimate objects, definitely not babies, as mono literally means monkey)
- chido = pretty
- Simón = cool

Crocodile!!

Onto the adventure!  Playa Ventanilla is a nearly untouched beach in the state of Oaxaca that is protected by Mexican law to preserve the habitat.  For $3 US/ person, a guide takes you on a trip through the mangrovenext to the beach, in which we had a crocodile swim up to and touch our boat, saw iguanas hanging out in the sun, saw a white-breasted eagle eating apart a fish, and a turtle putting eggs into a hole in the sand literally right next to a crocodile.  I say we got our $6 worth.

Don't be shy, tell us "hi"

So glad THE FOOT is better. Nothing can ruin a day like an uncooperative body part. The beach looks beautiful......restful. Enjoy the warmth! Linda

it's so great his foot is better now! Makes all the difference. The sand has helped his foot quite a bit, and it's back to being just about normal! It´s wonderful!

Hi Bessie, Thank you for making the wonderful boat video. With all of the wildlife it felt like a short trip along the Amazon. This was an adventure worthy of Harrison Ford. I especially loved listening to your conversation with the wildlife guide/ boatmaster. How come you never speak Spanish with us when you are visiting my house?! It would be cool to create a fictional story about the boatman and his adventures after years of exploring the mangroves. You could also write it as a movie script and ask Johnny Depp to play "Juan Sparrow" the boatman. Wow was that ever inexpensive for a tour and boat! VERY COOL EAGLE... Love and Kissssssses!

Crocoldiles AND turkeys? Awesome.

Im so glad to hear your foot is better Kyle! Nothing is worse than a bum leg/foot when travelling, aka walking everywhere (I experienced a symptom I called "leather leg" when I was in Italy for a week. Every step I took, my left leg creaked like old leather. And it felt like it too....made walking a little rough). And did I notice a BEARD?

Hugs to you both! Miss you!

Ya, I read somewhere that Mexico is best experienced with a beard and an eye patch. I don't really want to wear an eye patch, so beard it is.

Seriously though! The crocodile experience was pretty awesome in the moment, but afterward, Kyle and I looking back on it, we were both like "that was freaking scary". The guide probably did this every time, so he was cool about it, so it seemed ok, but how scary is a 10-12 foot croc swimming up to your boat. We could have been lunch!

It's amazing the crocodiles, turkeys and turtles. I guess the turkeys can outrun the crocodiles. Glad your foot is better Kyle. I'm sure you feel like a new person with a new foot. Have a great day!! Shawna

I was trying to get the turkey to run into the water where the crocodiles were, but alas, it outsmarted me.

Now that's what I call a nature tour! If you went on a guided tour like that in Florida or wherever, it would cost $25 and some of the animals might even be props! Having a croc next to the boat is toooo much! What a rush!

Ohhh, the croc was a rush alright. You get a great bang for your buck here in Mexico. That should be their new tourism slogan.
