Mexico, I've got questions for you.

Feelin' thoughtful
So Kyle and I are headed north through Mexico from the Guatemalan border. We're spending Semana Santa (literally Holy Week, aka the week of Easter) in Puerto Vallarta with Kyle's aunt and uncle, Susan and Dan, who live and work there 4 months of the year. So that means we're taking the next 3 weeks to explore as we head north through the large, southern neighbor of the US, and we'll take another week or two to explore heading back south into Central America.
Feelin' thoughtful
That added up, we're in Mexico the next 4-6 weeks, and we're both stoked. I, for one, have a lot I want answered from Mexico. I feel like I "know" it well having lived much of my life in Chicago, where Mexicans make up a chunk of the population, and from my years of studies, but there's so much more I want to know.
Mexico, here's what I wonder about you:
- Are mariachi bands for real? Do dudes really walk around in crush velvet and sparkly outfits with enormo sombreros playing feisty music?
- Can I find burritos that taste like Chipotle's?
- Are there lots of chihuahuas there?
- Does all mole sauce taste like burnt pooh? If so, why do people like it?
- Do Mexicans fly as many flags in their country as in Chicago?
- Do any Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo the way Americans do?
- Do people really take siestas mid-afternoon in the streets like I've seen in paintings?
- Can someone teach me the Mexican Hat Dance?
Hopefully, I'll have this and a whole lot more answered about Mexico a month from now. If there's anything you want us to accomplish or explore for you, I'm open to requests.

I could teach you the Mexican Hat Dance. A pleasant surprise: It's actually MORE fun than it looks! And you get to yell "Viva Mexico!" in the middle of it. Seriously.
Man! If I had known you knew the mexican hat dancing we would have been dancing around sombreros to the wee hours! It'll have to wait until we get back. We can trade tips.
I'll do it only if I get to wear one of those black and white sequined outfits.
Find me some authentic framed art. I want to buy a van full and sell it in a gas station parking lot in Peoria. Specifically, Velvet Matador, Velvet Sacred Heart of Mary (they show a lot of blood in their religious art) and last but not least, Velvet Elvis. Seriously, I hope it's fun. In the movies, the police are portrayed as corrupt. How much is true? Kyle, how are your feet doing?
The police in Mexico so far seem about as lazy as police in other countries.
My feet still hurt :(
Kyle y Bessie, espero que usted esté bien. Pensé que sería diversión para sugerir tequila del reposado que bebe del anus de un perro rabioso del chihuahua. (out of control body shots style) Si usted tiene el valor. Más importantemente, ahorré todos los cuadros de su teléfono del Sprint. Son en un archivo que yo email de la lata usted cuando usted lo desea. Amor, Su Hermano Aaron
Yikes! I'll do no body shots with chihuahuas - at least that no one will see pictures of.
Wait. Creepy. I can't even let that joke sit out there...
Do Mexicans fly as many flags in their country as in Chicago?
Do any Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo the way Americans do?
lololololol =D !!!!!!
keep us updated on that
oh and kyle...
Is there tequila that doesn't make me regret my decision to drink it?
i would like to know the answer to that one too!
You really have to find some good mole, food of the God's!
This is what I hear, but I have yet to find it. I´m not leaving Mexico until I get good mole. It has to be out there somewhere...
As a Mexica Revolutionary I find your questions and comments very disrespectful. Your racial profilie is the exact reason why our fight will be going on for years to come. Europian repression will end.Get informed, check out this site www.mexica-movement.org
Aun un revolucionario debe entender sarcasmo, si?
Bessie & Kyle- I live full time in Mexico at Lake Chapala near Guadalajara. Yes mariachi bands are for real, and yes they dress up in those gorgeous charro outfits. We see them regularly at fiestas and other events. There is even a national mariachi event in Guadalajara every year. They're great. The mariachis originated in Jalisco State (where Guadalajara is) along with tequila (the town of Tequila is northwest of Guad) and Charros, the Mexican cowboys.
There are tons of chihuahuas where I live, and I've seen them all over Western Mexico.
You must have been eating some bad mole. Or maybe it actually was poo. The stuff I taste is great.
Mexicans are very patriotic and their flags are everywhere. Also, Fall is a very patriotic season, with Independencia (Sept. 15) and Revolution Day (Nov.20)
Cinco de Mayo is not a big deal in Mexico. Mexicans who live in the US made it a big deal there.
Mexicans do take siestas, but I haven't seen many do it in public. It's a great idea by the way, especially since the middle of the afternoon can be quite hot, the time when only mad dogs and Englishmen are out (or Americans).
You'll have to learn the hat dance on your own. It's time for my sieta...

Bessie, you are so dang funny! I can't stop laughing!!! Ha ha ha ha ha ha. Aha ha ha ha ha!
