Wandering in Korea: Anyang City & the Chungang Market

Feelin' happy
I had a Tuesday night free, and was thinking, "hey, I really miss random adventuring around." So I called one of my co-workers to find out how to take the bus to the center of the city we live in. I've never riden a bus here, and I don't understand what this means: 버스에 타, but I figured, meh, how hard could it be?
Feelin' happy
"Take bus 3 from in front of the big outlet store, and get off in front of the big green building" he says.
"I'm on it." I had a slight snafu with taking the bus 03 instead of the bus 3 (which apparently are pretty different), so I rode around in a circle for 20 minutes, but it didn't slow me down.
On my adventure, I came across copious amounts of neon signs, smelly fish, and wiggling creatures that are still oddities in my mind and just plain bizarre food. Somewhere in there I stopped for Cold Stone - I couldn't resist a little familiar indulgance. In the end I made it home, I'm pretty proud I can manage the buses around South Korea.
Come along on my first bus adventure to Anyang and the Chungang Market.

Don't those slimy little octopus make you hungry? Not me either, really... They're edible/ delicious in these dinner pancake things, but it's so hard for me not to visualize them swimming around...
They serve garlic at most meals though - Dan would love it!
Thanks Bess!
i felt like I was right there with you. I like those sparkly 1980's visor hats. Stylish!
Love U -Melissa
yeah! wish you were! Maybe you can come by Korea in October or March?? :)
oh, and at some point, I will OWN one of those - they're fabulously terrible. I just have to find a way to justify it...
Wow! Fun tour! :) Especially loved the fresh foods! Not quite like Jewel. LOL
Pretty neat huh! Now that i know how to get there, I hope to go back to shop there semi-regularly! (I have to learn numbers first though - or I guess just carry a pad of paper!)
Hey Bessie and Kyle! Wow... wonderful market video. Apparently people actually eat a lot of those wigggggggly sea creatures or they wouldn't be for sale in the market! I'm proud of your navigation skills and impressed with the beauty of the city. We have been watching recent news broadcasts intently. Don't hesitate to fly out of Seoul if the North Korean warlike behavior gets more crazy. We love you both and want your safety to be the top priority and should think your school would want you safe also!!!
Peace and Love.........................................
many people seem to love all those funny fishies and wiggly octopus, I don't know if I'd ever want to take some home myself though.
In your video you said that you don't often see someone watering produce. Guess you haven't been to Jewel in a while. The watering there, however, is done through automation. Periodically, sprayers douse the produce displayed below while a Gene Kelly-like voice croons, "Singing in the rain, just singing in the rain...." to alert shoppers to step back from the produce rack and not get wet! Loved your trip to the market. Wish I could tell what the prices meant! I don't think I could ever get used to eating some of their "delicacies."
I would have really liked the "Singing in the Rain" to accompany the market - that would have made it quite enjoyable and a touch more confusing. :)
Hello from Bogota!
Just want to take a moment to thank you guys for keeping such an awesome travel blog and the additional info you´ve sent a few months back via email. My buddy and I are staying at the Platypus in Bogota. We trekked all around today, went to the northern, more affluent part and the visibly poorer parts (shanty town). It´s been an exciting experience so far (day 2). We´re heading to Medellin tomorrow and from there onto Santa Marta.
Best of luck teaching in Korea!
Jimmy
wow! Have a GREAT time in Colombia. I'll never forget the time we spent there and how what I saw defied my preconceived notions of it. I'm sure you'll have a great trip! Are you blogging while you're there?
No blogging for me...other than sending a few occasional emails. I did bring my DSLR and I´m already up to 10 gigs of pictures. When I get back home and after some editing, I´ll send you guys a link to it. Did you guys ever go up to Guatape to see La Piedra (it´s 1.5hrs from Medellin).
We´re currently waiting for our bus to go from Medellin to Cartagena. I´m totally not looking forward to the 12 hour bus ride.
Thanks. This is great. I loved it.
