A Shaman Ritual: Another Korean WTF Moment

Feelin' scared

One would think that the longer we stay here, the more we understand.  In a sense this is true, as we understand more about Korean culture everyday, but then there is always something else that happens that adds to the confusion.  The more we learn, the more we don't understand.

Walking back from hiking in Bukhansan National Park we had one of those i-don't-understand/whaaaaaaa???/WTF moments that are becoming a normal occurance now.  It started when we heard some drumming and yelling.  Being the curious people that we are, we had to check it out.  It's suffice to say that what we saw was one of the strangest things we've seen on our journeys so far.

Note: it's hard to tell from the video, but the female drummer on the right side only has one eye.  To the left side, off the screen, was a full-size, dead pig with a pitchfork sticking out of it.  In other words, it was weirder than the video indicates.

Don't be shy, tell us "hi"

I seem to remember seeing something very similar while bar hopping on Rush street in the eighties (no pitchforked pig though).

Yikes. How bizarre. That din would certainly draw attention! Brings to mind the street musicians along Michigan Avenue. Is there a mental health clinic nearby? And are you sure those are cigarettes? LOL

I believe that I have seen similar rituals before on National Geographic....minus the impaled pig but including the ingesting of blood....casting out evil spirits maybe? Guess it didn't work if she was trying to break her tobacco habit!
