Hiking Around Anyang

If you look up at the skyline from about anywhere near where we live, or within most of Korea, you can see little green mountains. Ok, ok, if the air isn't smoggy or if the "yellow dust" from China isn't around, then you can see them, which means you can see them about once a week. But still, they're there. Believe me.

In any case, one popular weekend activity for Koreans, especially those over 40 for some reason, is to follow the various trails up and down these mountains. It's easy to spot the Koreans on their way to/from the mountains as they are usually decked out in matching North Face gear and carrying backpacks weighed down with enough food for a small banquet. We don't have matching North Face gear or the desire to carry more than a pocketfull of food, but we still went anyway to two of the closest mountains to us: Surisan and Moraksan. ("san" means mountain in Korean)
COEX: The World's Largest Underground Mall

The World's Largest Undeground Mall! It sounds exciting at first, but then you realize 2 things: 1) There probably aren't that many malls underground and 2) it's a mall. Feelin' normal
It reminds me of The World's Largest Sitting Bronze Buddah on Lantau island in Hong Kong. Granted, it's an impressive statue, but then someone told me that there were larger sitting buddahs in the world, they were just made out of something else that wasn't bronze. And there are really large reclining buddahs. The one in Hong Kong, was large, sitting, and bronze, therefore it gets the distinction. So, if you're looking for large, bronze buddahs, Hong Kong is the place, and if you prefer to do subterranian shopping, go to COEX Mall in Seoul.

Teaching kindergartners is everything I thought it would be: snot. tears. hilarity. Sometimes the kids are really adorable and make me laugh, and other times I want to be the furthest place from a child I can imagine. Every half an hour we rotate various books: Math, Picture Dictionary, English Land, etc. I say stuff, they repeat it, they repeat it some more.

Cookin' With Nanta

In our quest to do all things Seoul, we stumbled upon an array of "non-speaking" theatrical performances that seem to be all the rage here. We had our choice from a breakdancing jailbreak, to all kinds of Stomp! imitations, to what we finally settled on: Nanta.Feelin' normal

Finally Getting Out of Seoul (and going to Gangneung)

Truthfully, even though we had been in Korea for 2 months, we hadn't gone anywhere outside the Seoul metropolitan area. Granted, that area is huge and would take you every day of one year to explore it, but it's still a little chunk of the whole country. So, feeling the itch of hitting the open road (or in Korea, the heavily trafficked road) we decided to go to Gangneung on the East coast of the country for a beachy good time.
