Feelin' happy

Today is the last day of my nearly 2 weeks in Chicago, and it was wonderful.  Kyle and I split off, and I enjoyed my truly indulgant time with loved ones while he further pursued his love/ hate relationship with learning spanish.

I embraced babies, spent pretty much every waking minute visiting people, hugged what feels like hundreds of people, and yes, Kyle, drank tasty beer.  I was welcomed by smiles and hospitality everywhere I went, and enjoyed the brownies, Indian Food and Jamba Juice I'd been craving for months.  And by far, the most talked about tale from the road was our karaoke adventure.

Searching for "Wolf" in Monteverde

Feelin' thoughtful

On Thursday, during a break in my Spanish lessons at the Monteverde Institute, I opened up my computer to check my email.  That day, I had received an email from my uncle Dan, who had traveled through Central America almost 40 years ago:

"..I was in monteverde (with su’s mom) in january 1970 for a few weeks.  Many memories: primitive (mud) road up from paved road; 2-day hike over the continental divide led by a true mountain man whose name was “wolf” – was one of the original quaker war-resister settlers from iowa, as I recall; finding a scorpion between our sheets one night; wolf shooting a python  along the trail; staying overnight in a cabin along the trail, provisioned with some potatoes, and expectation that every traveling party to stays replenishes the food for next party..."

My (not so) normal life

Feelin' normal

So, while my wife is in Chicago visiting family and drinking beer that doesn't taste like piss water, I decided to stay in Monteverde, Costa Rica to improve my Spanish.  While I am here, I am staying with a Costa Rican family, going to school, and, in general, doing some pretty "normal" things.  However as this is Central America and not the Central Plains, things tend to not be so normal all of the time.

Normal:  Wake up, eat breakfast, and walk to school.
Not-so-normal:  On the way to school, I pass by a swarm of vultures feasting on the dead carcass of some animal.  I'm glad I ate breakfast before I saw this.

Of Imaginary Numbers and the Subjuctive

Feelin' annoyed

This is for all of you language-lovers (or haters) out there...

Remember when in Algebra class you learned all about imaginary numbers?  No?  Ok, a refresher.  i = square root of -1 and it's imaginary because there is no square root of negative one.  So, if you express something like 2i, it means it is two times the square root as one, which means twice of something that doesn't exist.  And i squared?  That equals -1 which brings you back into "real" numbers again.  Sigh.

Kyle Pre-Shave
We all have our own Lifestyles.  Stay at home parents, entrepreneurs that work for themselves, priests, aerobics instructors, Brittney Spears.  Each have different incomes, lengths of dresses (what's it called what priests wear?), and even hair (Kyle and Brittney used to have similar haircuts - shown right).

I've done the student thing.  The work 9-5 thing.  Lately I subscribe to the traveling vagabond, and boy do I like it.  I sometimes don't know where my next meal is coming from, where I'll be sleeping that night, let alone where I might be month from now.  It's exhilirating.
