Scenes from Bangkok

Wat Pho, Bangkok, Thailand-11

Memories are fickle things.  Some stay in your mind just as they happened; some change over time; some become sensational tales that you don't even believe in, and some just sink into your mind as a feeling, void of pictures or sound.  For me, Bangkok produces the latter.  Even as I write this, the images in my head are slowly fading like pictures left in the sun.  It's a regrettable thing, because while Bangkok has produced no indelible images, it is a place I don't want to forget.  Like a slide projector, my mind recalls some of the sights and feelings of an unforgettable, yet forgettable city.

The Spectacular Wats of Bangkok

As we wrote before, Bangkok is a crazy city full of seemingly incongruent dichotomies.  But, it is also a city that is the center of Thai Buddhism which is reflected by the wats in the Old City.

Note that one thing the pictures do not show is how increadibly hot it was.  With temperatures around and over 100 degrees with swealtering humidity, we spent most of our time running from shade to shade.  Fortunately, we were looking at quite beatiful temples, so the heat didn't affect our experience too much.

Living life out of a Brochure

Haad Yuan on Koh Phagnan, Thailand

If you're a keen observer, you'll notice that our location marker on our homepage has settled itself on Koh Phangan, off the east coast of Thailand for some time.  We didn't set out to get stuck here for so long, but it's just one of those places that is hard to leave.  In fact, we've met several "nesters" who take up semi-permanent residence in a room of a guest house - one has even been here for almost 6 years.  (When I asked Bessie what she thought he does for a living, she responded "Hangs out.")  Since we have been staying in the same place, we've formed a pseudo-life here with a semi-regular routine that seems to come from something out of a brochure for an alternative living community - the kind of community meant for city-dwellers who have burnt themselves out on the rat race life.

So, in that vein, I have created a brochure for our little living community here on Haad Yuan beach in Koh Phangan.

Ko Phangan, Thailand

Long, white sand beaches.  Calm, clear, blue ocean water.  Restaurants lining the shore.  Palm trees stretching out over the sand.  Sunbathers reading and soaking all the vitamin A the sun has to offer.

Quick!  What comes to your mind?
