Yoga Keeps Me Sane

Written by Bessie about Korea, Republic of. Feelin' happy

There it is. My year in a nutshell: doing yoga has kept me sane. (Although if I exposed the full truth, I'd elaborate about long Skype calls, wine, chocolate...) But it's the bending and breathing of yoga that make a lasting impact.

I've practiced on and off since high school always loving the balance it brough to my life. But when a friend that's been here a few years told me, "teaching in Korea's a good time to dive into hobbies," I didn't hesitate. I couldn't agree with him more, and I tell every newcomer I meet.

The World's Smallest Niche Business

I've been reading a lot lately about niche businesses.  Businesses that find a small, yet passionate set of customers and make a decent living by making a product for those customers.  Nothing, though, beats the niche that I just saw on the street outside of our apartment.

Traveling Knife Sharpener Guy

Admittedly,  my Korean is fairly non-existant but from the looks of it, this man appears to have knife sharpening equipment in the back of his truck.  Knife Sharping + Truck = Business Gold.  Yes, he could very well be the world's only traveling knife sharpener.

Think spotlights and track lighting. A blow-up backdrop. Glitter and Fur. Professional Photographers. A crowd full of signs. Dozens of bouquets of flowers.

Yep. It's Kindergarten Graduation in Korea.

The Unplanned Future

In Phase 1, we did the "Rice and Beans Tour" and took on Mexico, Central and South America.  It was a year that brought us from Mexico City to Buenos Aires where we road innumerable chicken buses, climbed active volcanoes, and learned the various local slang for the word "hangover".  In Phase 2 (also called the "Teach the Youngins" phase) we went to Korea to teach and replenish the travel coffers.  Now, folks, we are almost in Phase 3, the "Yet-To-Be-Named-Southeast-Asia" Phase.  That's right.  We've been informed that the last day of March will also be our last day of teaching and then we will be free to roam once more.

Get Your Fingers Away from my Bum-hole!

Among the many transferrable skills I've picked up as an English teacher in Korea, none are more vital than being able to mime: "No, actually, it's not funny to point your fingers into teacher's butt." In case you find yourself in need of protection, it involves a lot of angry finger waving, eye squinting and bum protecting.

Think I'm joking? Someone bothered to make a statue.
