The wind blows in Ubud, tickling the tiny hairs on the back of my neck. It feels magical.

When God Came to Earth

What would you do if God came to Earth?  In Bali, this happens every 210 days.

Before God comes to Earth, for 3 days straight, the Balinese are tempted by an evil spirit to do bad things.  Selfish things that we all want, but are not good for others.  In order to restrain from the temptations, medition and self-restraint is practiced.  If successful, the higher self will supercede the ego and no one will succumb to the temptations.

I've never been away from home for this long, and it would be dandy, wonderful, great, if I didn't miss people back home so (your favorite expletive) much. It's been 13 months, and will be 14 months before we get back for a 2 month visit, and we were on the road the year before that. I'm already plotting out the ways to spend those first few days at home maximizing every moment with as many hugs as possible.

The Art of Gratitude in Bali

Everyday in Bali has a special significance.  The sun has risen, the crops have grown just a little bit more, and we awake to another day where the breath enters and exits the body.  This alone makes the day meaningful and for the Balinese, it is a reason to be grateful.

If you walk along any street, on the ground in front of every shop and house, you will see the daily offering put out by its inhabitants.  Usually made of nothing more than bamboo, coconut tree leaves, and flowers, the offerings are constructed each morning as it's own separate piece of art.  Step by step, a simple stroll down the street can easily turn into a long admiration of the beauty and skill of these tiny, organic art pieces.

How we started our dream, and how you can, too

We've written over 350 posts so far about our travels, but we don't often dig deep into why we started traveling and the spark that keeps us going.

Let's start by rolling back the clock a bit to about 3 years ago to May 2007.  At that time, we dreamt of big travels, but this website didn't exist.  No one knew us as world travelers.  Back then, we both had stable jobs that we liked, a cute apartment in the north side of Chicago, and we were looking forward to getting married.  However, in the forefront of both of our minds was the insatiable desire to see as much of the world as we could.
