Argentina

Wine, Wine, Wine! Santiago & Mendoza

Central Chile & Argentina are huge wine producing areas, with micro-climates similar to those in Napa Valley and parts of France and Italy.  Traveling by bus through these areas, short green trees spread over the rolling hills, and delicious grapes hang, warmed by the sun.  It's a beautiful sight really, and the yummyness of wine aside, the areas are worth a visit.

We spent the better part of 3 days exploring some vineyards, swooshing wine around in glasses and learning a thing or two about wine making, sadly, none of which involved squishing grapes with my toes.  Maybe I'll start that tour.

Reflections on a Year of Travel

Three years ago, Kyle and I decided we'd start saving to travel.  We didn't quite know how or where, but we knew we wanted it, and wanted it way more than anything else we could spend our money on.

Two years later we had sold our cars and our furniture, stored some things in Dad's basement, and we set out for adventure.  Full of travel lust, last January we wrote Why I Travel.

I think of it as the training wheels.  I don't really know where it will lead us or how long we'll be here, but we're living in an apartment in Buenos Aires and it's great!

Running + Beer + Sightseeing = Awesome

There are a lot of things in this world that I like and when I can combine them, all the better.  (Well, except for maybe steak and ice cream, which should remain separate)  So, when I can combine running, drinking beer, and seeing a new city, it is a hard opportunity to pass up.

This past weekend we joined a local hashing group and ran around some of the more tourisy areas of Buenos Aires.  If you don't know what hashing is, it is basically like a scavanger hunt for beer.  The slogan of hashing is "Drinkers with a running problem".  Basically, people lay out a "trail" with different markers that point where the beer is at and then the runners follow these signs to the beer.  It gets a little more complicated as some of the markers lead the wrong direction or are intentionally vague as to make the runners run around in search of the right path.  If you think this sounds cool, you can probably find a local hash group by clicking here.  There are groups all over the world, even in the Congo.

Green Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a big, hectic city.  Think of it as the New York of South America.  You can do anything at just about any time of day and the options are amazing.  With all the activity going on in the city, though, you think that would drive people crazy.  There needs to be a place to relax.  New York, for instance, has Central park.  Buenos Aires, surprisingly, has a series of parks.

In one area of town (near Palermo), you can find about 6 parks all about 5 blocks by 5 blocks in size, plus a zoo.  The zoo smell wafts over into the parks sometimes (mmm...elephant dung) so there's that extra wild ambience added to it.
